The Saint Canard Midland Railway and why it exists

By Tony L. - Posted on 11 January 2009

Since 2002, I've been working on a model railroad as a test bed of sorts. While I've been messing with toy and model trains and had a couple layouts of one sort or another since I was 8 years old or so, this one is my first "permanent" modeling space.

This section details the designs and construction of a simple layout as a foundation for much larger dreams, goals, and skills.

At its core, the philosophy of Model Railroading is simple: have fun, make friends, put travel and research to tangible benefit, learn a slew of skills that can develop into something lucrative and useful, and do it all through something the whole family enjoys.

Beyond the core, model railroading is incredibly multi-faceted. A scope of modeling choices can run the whole gamut from fanciful storytelling whimsy to the most accurate miniaturization of real life - or somewhere between. It encompasses carpentry, mechanics, painting, graphic design, electronics, civil engineering, historic preservation, photography, art, storytelling, and more; a master craftsman in the hobby is truly a multi-talented individual. Almost any other standalone hobby has applications to or within model railroading. But mastery of all or even just any of the facets is not required - you can learn them all as you go, or simply focus on those you find the most enjoyable. There's no right or wrong way to go about it.

Model Railroading is Art In 4 Dimensions.

I'm blessed to find enrichment in such a rewarding hobby!
